The Ajaccio Citadel (built in 1492) overlooking the town’s beach, played an important role in the defence of the Corsican port. The town may have been named after the Greek hero Ajax but the most probable etymology for the name refers to the ancient Greek word agation (the good port). Corsica was ruled by the Italian city-state Genoa until the year of Napoleon's birth, 1769.
